“The kids showed me things I never saw before, I got more than I gave, this was truly an amazing experience”
Welcome to the Atlantic College China Project 2006 Webpage.
CHINA Project is an initiative created in 2002 in United World College of the Atlantic with one vision: to make education a reality for underprivileged children. “CHINA” is an acronym for “Creating Hope, Inspiring New Actions”. Our aim is to make education within reach of children from underprivileged backgrounds in China. We also hope that this project can foster new ideas and new actions not only in local Chinese communities, but also among ourselves. One important aspect of CHINA Project is bringing international exposure to children in rural China. This feature goes hand-in-hand with the aims of the United World Colleges.

Through cultural exchange, children are able to take a glimpse of the world beyond their usual boundaries and learn to get along and exchange experiences with foreigners. At the beginning we were employed by Yao Hua Experimental School in Shenzhen. The money we earned plus some money that was donated from the school was all granted as scholarships to some selected underprivileged students (from a village near nanchung), in order for them to obtain further education.
Later on we flew to Chengdu the capital of Sichuan province, from there we went to Nanchong, a small town in the northern part of Sichuan province. Hai Wang Guang Cai School is located in Jialing district, a poor and undeveloped area of Nanchong. During our one-week stay in Nanchong, we taught Math and English, played and worked with primary and junior secondary school students. 6 selected students which we taught in that school got enough money for three more years of education. This part of the project was the main aspect of it. It truly was a remarkable event.
“We played and learned in ways we have never experienced before, I am very sad that you are leaving and wish that you will come again” said Wu Jia Ni, a 12 year old girl that was on the project. As the level of English of the students is elementary, both Chinese and non-Chinese members of the project took part to facilitate the teaching. We have set a new record for ourselves by raising a substantial amount of funds for sponsoring the students so they can get an education. We hope to preserve the connections that we have made this year for future CHINA Projects. Through our teaching program, we offered math and language skills to the children. We played games and connected with the children. They had an opportunity to meet people from around the world and exchange ideas with them. It was an eye-opening experience both for the children and for our project members.
