Some teachers and students at Atlantic College have begun to provide a web design service for other organisations: these partners should on the whole be non-profit, perhaps charitable organisations, whose ideals are close to those of Atlantic College.

The purpose of this 'start-up' is threefold:

Amon at the computer 44kB
  1. to teach certain technical skills to the students, many of whom are from developing countries from around the world and are studying at the College on full scholarships – programming and web design are skills that are in demand in the home countries of many of them;
  2. to provide a community service – the idea of community service is fundamental to the College, and different students choose different commitments for their two years here; second-years should have reached a high level of competence, and should pass on their expertise to the first-years, as happens in most of the other Services; and
  3. to foster an awareness of issues, through the students learning about the partner organisations; these contacts should feed back into the wider College community, and we hope that students will keep up an involvement with those organsitations.

While we are of course not looking to make any money off this, organisations that have sufficiently strong financial backing, such as a grant from the EU, might be willing to be charged: all such 'profits' go to our scholarship fund.

  1. Even though students are at the College for two years only and many may come without a background in web design and programming, as a group we will be able to do work of a high standard and to provide long-term continuity.
  2. The main limitation is that we are not experts in the fields that the organisations are working in: but that is no different from commercial web design companies.
  3. There are additional services that students at the College can provide, such as non-technical translation, or local background knowledge, or training in computing skills.

    (We can also arrange for hosting of a website, help purchase a domain name, enable the partner organisation to update pages on their own, and so on.)

We have designed and kept up to date various sites for a number of years, and we are ready to start working with several new partner organisations and to involve more students as needed.
